Enter our creative writing competition

Are you a budding writer? A Jane Austen, JK Rowling, a John Steinbeck or a John Grisham in the making? If so, we are looking for you to enter our Third Age Trust, creative writing competition.

Based on the successful Welsh competition, we are launching a UK-wide initiative to find the best short story penned by one of our members. The winning story will be published in Third Age Matters magazine, which reaches over a quarter of a million households. We will also commission at least one illustration to accompany it. The winner will see their story in print and will receive a framed copy of their story as it appears in the magazine, with the bespoke illustration.

You may want to discuss your ideas in your interest groups via phone, email or virtual conference call (there is guidance on how to do this) or this may inspire you to start up your own creative writing group. There is advice on how to do this from our Creative Writing subject adviser. Whatever you decide, we want your story! 

How it Works

• In summary, your story must be your own, individual, original work, in English, a maximum of 1500 words, and not submitted anywhere else.
• Your submission must be on the theme of TIME.
• You must read the Creative Writing Competition Rules before submitting. Any submission which does not meet these will not be considered.
• All submissions will be judged by regional panels and the best story from each region/ devolved country will be compared to decide on an overall winner.

Atlantic woodlands are one of the richest and most treasured habitats found within the British Isles. These forested ecosystems are teeming with biodiversity and showcase some of the most exceptional examples of lichens, bryophytes and ferns that the UK has to offer.

Beatrix Potter was best known for her story-telling, but unknowingly to most she was an advocate for conserving the natural and cultural heritage of the Lake District. The beautiful landscape as we see it today is partly thanks to her drive and dedication to safeguard the land she learned from and loved.

Plantlife’s Photography Competition & Exhibition is an opportunity to capture the beauty of Atlantic woodlands that served as an inspiration to Beatrix and influenced many elements of her work. This opportunity is a platform to promote the lesser known aspects of her life as a conservationist, a scientist and an educator - a celebration of her life achievements. Therefore, this photography competition is dedicated to Beatrix Potter.

Three photo competition categories:
1. Woodlands in the landscape. Photograph this treasured habitat stitched across the Lake District.
2. Small things in woodlands. Capture the lichen & bryophyte residents of these special places.
3. People in woodlands. Snapshot the personal interactions between people & the woodlands.

The age categories are under 11’s, 11-17 year olds and over 18’s. There will be a first, second and third prize winner for each age group within each of the competition categories.

PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION 2014

RULES and CONDITIONS

1.  There are two age groups, ADULT and JUNIOR (16 and under).

2.  The competition is open to all except professional photographers.

3. There are three categories:  21^st CENTURY, WEATHER and SMALL. No portraits allowed. You may enter up to three images per category.

4.  Each photograph must be accompanied by an official Entry Form and a fee of £1 per photograph, by cheque made payable to “STFH”, or by cash to the office.

5. Photographs must be 7” X 5”, glossy or matt, unmounted, with your details on the back           for identification purposes.

6.  Images must be your own work and it is your responsibility to ensure it does not infringe        any third party or copyright laws.

7.  Copyright of all images submitted for this competition remains with the respective     entrants.  Prints will not be returned but may be collected from the library on the    morning of the last day of the exhibition.

8.  All photographs will be judged anonymously and the judges’ decisions will be final.

9.  Prize winning photographs will be exhibited in Salisbury Public Reference Library, Market Place, during May 2014. All the best photographs will be exhibited if there is sufficient space.
