Aerial Archaeology Mapping site.

Are you aware of English Heritage's Aerial Archaeology Mapping site.
I hope this link works HERE
Click the box bottom left to open and to get the OK to work.

I had centred it on Stapleford. But also click on the Black Rectangle bottom right.

Aerial Archaeology Mapping Explorer

I looked at Durrington Wall for instance.

2,500 years of history uncovered in Melksham

This web link opens to show details of this Archaeological dig.

https://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/news/thousands-of-years-of-history-uncovered-in-melksham

Our preparation for the construction at Melksham Community Campus site early last year revealed archaeological evidence from as early as the Iron Age (700BC to AD43), found by Cotswold Archaeology.

Field boundary ditches and a phase of settlement, four oxshoes, iron knives, pottery, animal bone and burnt daub with wattle impressions were among the items found.

The investigations found most archaeology dating to the later prehistoric, Roman (AD43 to AD410) and medieval (AD1066 to AD1539) periods, highlighting some of the historical origins of Melksham.

Password Strength Meter

The Open University showed us their Password tester. Just open the link below and see for yourself.

We found Password strength programs on the Future Learn course https://www2.open.ac.uk/openlearn/password_check/index.html and another http://password-checker.online-domain-tools.com. Try using salisbury as a test password. Then add a space between each letter and see the difference this simple change makes to the password strength.

I wrote that in 2014 and it is still valid. The second link is more serious.

Governmentium Vaccination Rollout

Science News

Oxford University researchers have discovered the densest element yet known to science. The new element, Governmentium, which has the symbol Gv, has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton like particles called pillocks.

Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second, to take from 4 days to 4 years to complete. Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2 to 6 years.

It does not decay but instead undergoes a reorganisation in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places. In fact, Governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganisation will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes.

This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as a critical morass.

When catalysed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium, symbol Ad, an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium, since it has half as many pillocks but twice as many morons.

Canberra U3A Camera Club meeting. 10.45 pm 16 th Nov 2020

 Canberra U3A Camera Club meeting.

This meeting is, as I explained, a Workshop at which we generally discuss more technical things, on this occasion, "Colour Management - How Colour is Managed in Digital Photography." Sometimes other members of the class present the topic but this time I am again in the hot seat. There was a time I could talk for two hours non-stop but I am finding I need a break nowadays. Anyway, it gives members time to do other things for 5-10 minutes - this will be around the 11.00am mark (midnight your time).

Needless to say, your members can see some of our latest pictures on our new web site at http://u3acanberracameraclub.smugmug.com if they care to check in. It is public.

If you wish to join in I can send you the link.

I was impressed with the creativity of the projects you set your members. I tend to be rather more formal with Set Subjects, so I will have to give some thought to a different format sometimes. I will also definitely include Luminar in the workshops for next year. This is one of the benefits of cross-fertilization, one I was hoping would happen with interaction with other groups.

Again, thank you for having me at your place,

Bob

Hoax email from PDS (Parcel Delivery Service)

!!!!!BEWARE!!!!!

Some local U3A group members have been receiving these unwanted emails.

It could cost you £315 just for using the phone number included.

A scam from Belize.

Read this web site for more information https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/news/hoax-email-from-pds-parcel-delivery-service

Action Fraud is reminding everyone that a chain email circulating warning about a postal scam that could leave you £315 out of pocket - is a hoax.

U3A Eye Project

May I draw your attention to the U3A EYE photographic project. It is not a competition.

The text on the U3A website says

Get involved in U3A Eye

  •  Are you a budding photographer?
  •  Keen to learn a new skill or simply interested in the world around you and how it appears?
We are running a fortnightly project to encourage people to take and submit pictures of their surroundings during this unprecedented time. We are going to be posting a different theme each fortnight and inviting U3A members to submit their photos on that topic.

This is
not a competition and it is not about your photographic skill – what we want from you are interesting photos, possibly different ways of viewing things, anything which has captured your imagination or caught your eye.

At the end of every fortnight we will choose and publish up to 15 photos on an online gallery for each theme so that all of members can enjoy the images. All you need to do is to upload your photo using the form below (you will receive an acknowledgement once submitted).

The deadline for submission of your photos for the first theme is 9th April.

The first theme is: YELLOW
Submit your photos by clicking here.
We look forward to seeing your pictures!

Plaque unveiling

  • CANCELLED

  • The plaque to Herbert Ponting will be unveiled at 4pm on Saturday March 21st, at the location of his birthplace, 21 Oatmeal Row in Salisbury Market Place.
  • The unveiling will be carried out by Wendy Searle, who recently completed a solo expedition to ski unaided, dragging a sledge carrying her supplies and tent, over 700 miles from the Antarctic coast to the South Pole.
  • It will be followed by tea. All are welcome at the unveiling but there are limited places for tea, which will be allocated on a first come first served basis. If you would like to attend, please contact Janet Patch, 01722 330096, patch.janet@gmail.com.

Film show at St John's Place, Lower Bemerton

Cancelled
The Civic Society and the Bemerton Film Society will be showing The Great White Silence, filmed by Ponting, on March 18th. He recorded almost every aspect of the 1910 expedition – the scientific work, life in camp, the local wildlife, the preparations for the assault on the Pole – and edited his footage into this remarkable feature, complete with vivid tinting and toning. The alien beauty of the landscape is brought dramatically to life and the challenges facing the expedition revealed in brilliant detail.

For this event there is one admission charge of £6 for all - payment at the door. Non-alcoholic beverages will be available at 50p, or a glass of wine for £2.

The doors will open at 6.00pm, with the film starting at 6.30, and ending at about 8.25. Some parking is available opposite the church, in the small car park and on the road. The address is Lower Road, Bemerton, Salisbury SP2 9NT.

Conversational French

We have lost one member and would like possibly another two as it’s not too often that everyone is available.  We meet at houses on Monday mornings and our ability is sort of fumbling intermediate with humour!   So not too serious but not novices ( or nuns!).

Could you ask around Spire and possibly get suitable messages to the other two groups?

Best regards

Chrome Browser's Task Manager

For those people who use Chrome Browser I have come across a very useful item. Chrome has its own Task Manager. This can help find and fix any issues that are causing it to run slow, have dead tabs, or crash.
It is simple to get to simply click Shift and Esc and there it is.
