Canberra U3A Camera Club meeting. 10.45 pm 16 th Nov 2020
Canberra U3A Camera Club meeting.
This meeting is, as I explained, a Workshop at which we generally discuss more technical things, on this occasion, "Colour Management - How Colour is Managed in Digital Photography." Sometimes other members of the class present the topic but this time I am again in the hot seat. There was a time I could talk for two hours non-stop but I am finding I need a break nowadays. Anyway, it gives members time to do other things for 5-10 minutes - this will be around the 11.00am mark (midnight your time).
Needless to say, your members can see some of our latest pictures on our new web site at http://u3acanberracameraclub.smugmug.com if they care to check in. It is public.
If you wish to join in I can send you the link.
I was impressed with the creativity of the projects you set your members. I tend to be rather more formal with Set Subjects, so I will have to give some thought to a different format sometimes. I will also definitely include Luminar in the workshops for next year. This is one of the benefits of cross-fertilization, one I was hoping would happen with interaction with other groups.
Again, thank you for having me at your place,
Bob

creative writing competition
Enter our creative writing competition
Are you a budding writer? A Jane Austen, JK Rowling, a John Steinbeck or a John Grisham in the making? If so, we are looking for you to enter our Third Age Trust, creative writing competition.
Based on the successful Welsh competition, we are launching a UK-wide initiative to find the best short story penned by one of our members. The winning story will be published in Third Age Matters magazine, which reaches over a quarter of a million households. We will also commission at least one illustration to accompany it. The winner will see their story in print and will receive a framed copy of their story as it appears in the magazine, with the bespoke illustration.
You may want to discuss your ideas in your interest groups via phone, email or virtual conference call (there is guidance on how to do this) or this may inspire you to start up your own creative writing group. There is advice on how to do this from our Creative Writing subject adviser. Whatever you decide, we want your story!
How it Works
- In summary, your story must be your own, individual, original work, in English, a maximum of 1500 words, and not submitted anywhere else.
- Your submission must be on the theme of TIME.
- You must read the Creative Writing Competition Rules before submitting. Any submission which does not meet these will not be considered.
- All submissions will be judged by regional panels and the best story from each region/ devolved country will be compared to decide on an overall winner.
The submission portal is now open. Please submit your entry here: https://u3auk.wufoo.com/forms/z13mss1n09i5ahw/ The deadline for submission is 12 noon on 19th June 2020. No entries will be accepted after this date. We regret that we cannot accept any entries not submitted through this portal.
Happy writing!

U3A Eye Project
The text on the U3A website says
Get involved in U3A Eye
- Are you a budding photographer?
- Keen to learn a new skill or simply interested in the world around you and how it appears?
We are running a fortnightly project to encourage people to take and submit pictures of their surroundings during this unprecedented time. We are going to be posting a different theme each fortnight and inviting U3A members to submit their photos on that topic.
This is not a competition and it is not about your photographic skill – what we want from you are interesting photos, possibly different ways of viewing things, anything which has captured your imagination or caught your eye.
At the end of every fortnight we will choose and publish up to 15 photos on an online gallery for each theme so that all of members can enjoy the images. All you need to do is to upload your photo using the form below (you will receive an acknowledgement once submitted).
The deadline for submission of your photos for the first theme is 9th April.
The first theme is: YELLOWSubmit your photos by clicking here.
We look forward to seeing your pictures!

Plaque unveiling
- CANCELLED
- The plaque to Herbert Ponting will be unveiled at 4pm on Saturday March 21st, at the location of his birthplace, 21 Oatmeal Row in Salisbury Market Place.
- The unveiling will be carried out by Wendy Searle, who recently completed a solo expedition to ski unaided, dragging a sledge carrying her supplies and tent, over 700 miles from the Antarctic coast to the South Pole.
- It will be followed by tea. All are welcome at the unveiling but there are limited places for tea, which will be allocated on a first come first served basis. If you would like to attend, please contact Janet Patch, 01722 330096, patch.janet@gmail.com.
Film show at St John's Place, Lower Bemerton
The Civic Society and the Bemerton Film Society will be showing The Great White Silence, filmed by Ponting, on March 18th. He recorded almost every aspect of the 1910 expedition – the scientific work, life in camp, the local wildlife, the preparations for the assault on the Pole – and edited his footage into this remarkable feature, complete with vivid tinting and toning. The alien beauty of the landscape is brought dramatically to life and the challenges facing the expedition revealed in brilliant detail.
For this event there is one admission charge of £6 for all - payment at the door. Non-alcoholic beverages will be available at 50p, or a glass of wine for £2.
The doors will open at 6.00pm, with the film starting at 6.30, and ending at about 8.25. Some parking is available opposite the church, in the small car park and on the road. The address is Lower Road, Bemerton, Salisbury SP2 9NT.

Coronavirus Advice
If a U3A finds that a member has contracted coronavirus, please let the Trust know immediately.
The members of interest groups that any member with coronavirus has attended should all call 111 to ask for advice.
The monthly meeting should be cancelled for that month (and possibly longer) until the spread of the virus has been assessed.
In general a U3A may consider other precautions such as using hand sanitiser gel in interest groups and monthly meetings and reducing physical contact such as shaking hands until further information becomes available.
