DEVIZES BREWERY, CANAL AND MUSEUM Wednesday 3rd August 2016

Devizes is Simon Jenkins’ “first choice as the quintessential English town” - add in snuff, beer, canals and pre-historic gold and you have a splendid day out.

In the morning we will have coffee (included in the cost) at Wadworth Brewery followed by a tour which lasts for approximately 2-2.5hrs. We will have an introduction to the history of the brewery. After this we have a steep 4 floor climb, then we gradually go down through the traditional Victorian Tower Brewery to the 21st Century Copper House and see modern brewing methods. Next we visit the on-site Sign Studio where they still paint all of their 250 pub signs in the traditional way. Lastly we see the stables and the working Shire Horses. We will be rewarded at the end with a ‘tutored sampling’ of a selection of their hand crafted ales.

Please note – this is a Victorian building with steep stairs to navigate, narrow corridors and uneven floors.

At lunchtime you will be shown where lunch (at your own cost) can be taken around the attractive Market Square. After the break there will be a short guided tour through the most historic part of the town which boasts 500 listed buildings. The castle (now restored and private but visible) and the church were built by Osmund and Roger, Bishops of Salisbury. We will visit the church which has a beautiful Norman chancel. The walk will end at the Wiltshire Museum, which has a new display of dozens of spectacular treasures from the time of Stonehenge as well as galleries of later historical interest. There is a lift at the museum for the upper floors.

If you have one, PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR SALISBURY MUSEUM MEMBERSHIP CARD
